‘Together Everyone Achieves More’

Curriculum

We aim to use our curriculum to inspire and grow our children so they thrive and flourish as learners.

Our curriculum reflects the needs and characteristics of our community, our ambitions as a school and the requirements of the National Curriculum.  We aim for it to challenge and support our children, and to give them lots of opportunities to be creative and adventurous.

We have the highest possible expectations of our pupils and staff so that everyone can grow to be the best they can be.  We aim for our children to develop so as to reflect the values we hold dear as a school:

Our curriculum has been built on carefully sequenced knowledge so each topic / unit of learning helps to prepare the children for what is coming next.

At the same time, given our mixed-ages classes, the curriculum is organised into Year A and Year B so no-one repeats the same topics, and no-one misses out on any either.

We further ensure our curriculum delivers the best learning possible through

- Building substantive knowledge - the knowledge and explicit vocabulary used to learn about the content of each subject

- Building disciplinary knowledge - the use of knowledge, and how the children become more expert over time as musicians, artists, programmers or dancers

- Robust vocabulary teaching - we broaden the vocabulary of the children through teaching a set of ten "tier 2" words every week.  A good definition of Tier 2 words can be found here

- Regular practice of key knowledge - we revisit key learning frequently, encouraging the children to recall what they've already been taught, in order to embed it further for them
