Mathematics

At Moresby Primary School, we want our children to love maths. We want them to be confident when working with everyday maths, and to have no limits to their ambitions and grow up wanting to be accountants, engineers and bankers . The maths curriculum has been carefully shaped, to ensure they can make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems.  Our Mathematics curriculum is built around Power Maths, and then supplemented with additional arithmetic practise and use of the Times Tables Rockstars (TTR) app.  TTR tell us that we are consistently one of the schools with the fastest tables recall in the country!

At our school, we use Power Maths to deliver a high-quality mathematics curriculum that develops mastery for all pupils. We believe that every child can succeed in mathematics and should be given the opportunity to develop a deep, secure and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts, procedures and relationships.

Our curriculum follows the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, enabling children to explore concepts through practical resources, visual representations and abstract methods. By building carefully on prior learning and making meaningful connections between mathematical ideas, pupils develop confidence, fluency and a secure understanding of mathematics. Lessons are designed to encourage curiosity, resilience and a positive attitude towards challenge.

We aim to provide children with more than the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum. Through mathematics, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to thrive in everyday life and future employment. We recognise the importance of mathematics in an increasingly technological and interconnected world and seek to equip our children with the confidence to apply their learning beyond the classroom.

Learning is carefully sequenced so that new concepts build upon previously acquired knowledge. Through this progressive approach, children deepen their understanding over time, recognising patterns, making connections and applying their learning in a range of contexts. This supports pupils in moving from developing knowledge to becoming confident and independent mathematicians.

Through high-quality teaching, pupils develop conceptual understanding alongside fluency in calculation and number sense. They are encouraged to recall and apply their mathematical knowledge accurately and efficiently, while developing the confidence to explain their thinking and justify their reasoning.

Children are given regular opportunities to reason mathematically, make conjectures, identify patterns and communicate their ideas using precise mathematical language. They are also taught to solve a range of routine and non-routine problems, selecting appropriate strategies, breaking complex problems into manageable steps and demonstrating perseverance when faced with challenge. Through these experiences, pupils develop the skills and confidence needed to become successful lifelong learners and active participants in the wider world.
