Personal, Social and Health Education

At our school, we believe that PSHE is at the heart of preparing children for life in modern Britain and the wider world. Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to nurture confident, resilient and responsible individuals who understand how to keep themselves healthy, safe and happy, while developing positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging within their communities.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin their personal development journey through the United Curriculum. They learn how to manage their feelings and behaviour, build positive relationships, understand similarities and differences, and develop the confidence to explore the world around them. These early experiences provide the foundations for successful learning, wellbeing and citizenship throughout their school life.

From Years 1 to 6, we follow the Kapow PSHE scheme of work, which provides a progressive and comprehensive curriculum that supports children's personal, social, emotional and economic development. Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils develop their understanding of health and wellbeing, relationships, safety, citizenship and their role within society.

Our curriculum aims to equip children with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive both now and in the future. Pupils learn how to recognise and manage emotions, build healthy relationships, make informed choices, stay physically and mentally healthy, and understand how to contribute positively to their communities.

We recognise that personal development extends beyond discrete PSHE lessons. Through our weekly Personal Development and Wellbeing assemblies, pupils explore a wide range of themes that support their understanding of themselves and the world around them. In addition, our dedicated PSHE assembly programme provides opportunities to engage with important topics such as equality, diversity, anti-bullying, mental health, online safety, healthy lifestyles, environmental responsibility, community cohesion, world religions, cultural celebrations and significant local, national and global events. These experiences help children to develop empathy, respect, resilience and an appreciation of the diverse society in which they live.

Our PSHE curriculum promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. Through discussion, reflection and real-life contexts, pupils are encouraged to think critically, consider different viewpoints and develop the confidence to express their opinions respectfully.

Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) programme forms an important part of our wider PSHE curriculum. We use Clued Up for Growing Up from Year 1 to Year 4 and Kapow in Years 5 and 6, providing children with age-appropriate opportunities to develop their understanding of relationships, growing up, personal health and wellbeing.

By the time they leave our school, pupils will have developed the knowledge, skills and character needed to make positive choices, maintain healthy relationships, manage challenges and contribute positively to society. They will be equipped with the confidence, resilience and understanding required to become responsible, respectful and active citizens in an ever-changing world.
