We believe that a high-quality Religious Education curriculum makes a significant contribution to the education and development of children and young people. At its best, RE is intellectually challenging and personally enriching. It supports pupils in developing their beliefs and values, while promoting the virtues of respect, empathy and understanding, which are essential in our diverse society. It encourages thoughtful dialogue and reasoned discussion, helping children to explore the place of religion and belief in the modern world.

Religious Education is at the heart of our school ethos. By exploring a range of beliefs and worldviews, pupils are supported to develop the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about their own lives.

Our Religious Education curriculum will be delivered using the Kapow Primary scheme from September 2026, carefully aligned with the Cumbria Locally Agreed Syllabus to ensure full statutory coverage and progression.

Our RE curriculum:

• adopts an enquiry-based approach, in line with Ofsted guidance, beginning with pupils’ own lived experiences before exploring learning about and from religion and worldviews
• provokes challenging questions about meaning and purpose, belief, identity, right and wrong, commitment and belonging
• develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity alongside other principal religions and non-religious worldviews, supporting reflection and spiritual development
• encourages pupils to explore, reflect on and articulate their own beliefs in response to what they learn, considering how these influence personal, social and ethical questions
• enables pupils to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging, helping them to flourish as individuals and as members of a diverse society
• teaches respect for others, including those with different faiths and beliefs, and actively supports the challenge of prejudice and stereotyping
• develops precise and ambitious vocabulary, enabling pupils to communicate their understanding of religious and non-religious concepts accurately
• encourages pupils to consider their responsibilities to themselves, their communities and wider society, fostering empathy, generosity and compassion
• nurtures a sense of awe, wonder and mystery, supporting children’s spiritual development

British Values are embedded throughout our RE curriculum and underpin both classroom practice and the wider ethos of the school. Through carefully planned enquiry-based learning, enrichment opportunities and educational visits, pupils experience RE in meaningful and memorable ways. External contributors, including local clergy, members of different faith communities and other invited speakers, enhance learning and provide authentic insight. Visits to places of worship further deepen understanding and respect for religious diversity.

These rich and varied experiences help to promote a positive, inclusive school culture that values democratic principles, human rights and mutual respect, preparing children to become thoughtful, informed and compassionate global citizens.
