Computing

At our school, we recognise that Computing is an essential part of modern education and plays a vital role in preparing children for life in an increasingly digital world. Our Computing curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology.

We follow the Knowsley Computing Scheme of Work, which provides a clear progression of skills and knowledge across the primary years. This is carefully adapted to reflect our iPad-based approach, ensuring that pupils develop fluency in using a range of digital tools and applications in meaningful and purposeful contexts.

We believe that high-quality Computing education enables children to become not only users of technology, but also creators. It supports problem-solving, logical thinking and resilience, while fostering curiosity, creativity and innovation. Computing also provides rich opportunities to support learning across the wider curriculum.

Our Computing curriculum:

  • ensures pupils become confident, competent and responsible users of technology in an ever-changing digital world
  • develops computational thinking, including skills such as decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction and algorithm design
  • enables pupils to understand and apply the principles of computer science, including coding, programming and debugging
  • teaches pupils how digital systems work and how they can be used safely, effectively and creatively
  • ensures pupils understand how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, including awareness of online safety and digital wellbeing
  • provides opportunities for pupils to create digital content, including programming, multimedia presentations and data handling
  • develops pupils’ ability to evaluate and improve their work using digital tools
  • promotes independence and problem-solving through structured progression of skills within the Knowsley scheme

As an iPad-based school, we use technology as a powerful tool for learning across the curriculum. Pupils regularly use a range of apps to enhance their learning experience, including Seesaw, GarageBand, Times Tables Rockstars and Emile Spelling, alongside other subject-specific digital tools. These platforms support engagement, reinforce core skills and provide opportunities for practice and consolidation beyond discrete Computing lessons.

Online safety is a fundamental part of our Computing curriculum and is embedded throughout all units of work. Pupils are taught to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly, developing the knowledge and awareness needed to make informed choices about their online behaviour.

Through high-quality Computing teaching and meaningful use of technology, we aim to prepare pupils to be digitally literate, confident and adaptable learners who are ready for the demands of the future.
