At Moresby Primary School, we believe that a high-quality Science curriculum should inspire curiosity, foster a sense of wonder, and develop children’s understanding of the world around them. Science is a vital part of preparing pupils for life - particularly given the nature of many of the employment opportunities in our local area - equipping them with the knowledge and skills to ask questions, investigate ideas and think critically.

From September 2026, we will follow the Kapow Primary Science scheme of work in Key Stages 1 and 2, ensuring a clear progression of knowledge and skills across all year groups. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Science is taught through the United Curriculum, where learning is rooted in exploration, play-based discovery and first-hand experiences of the natural world.

Our Science curriculum is designed to develop both substantive knowledge (scientific facts and concepts) and disciplinary knowledge (the skills of working scientifically). Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils build secure understanding over time and are supported to apply their knowledge in meaningful and investigative contexts.

We aim for all children to see themselves as scientists — curious, inquisitive and confident learners who are not afraid to ask questions, make predictions and test ideas.

Our Science curriculum:

• develops pupils’ scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
• builds an understanding of how science explains processes and phenomena in the natural and physical world
• promotes curiosity and a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them
• develops pupils’ ability to work scientifically through observing, predicting, investigating, recording and evaluating
• encourages pupils to ask questions, test ideas and draw conclusions based on evidence
• provides opportunities for practical, hands-on learning that deepens understanding and engagement
• ensures progression of skills and knowledge through the Kapow Primary Science scheme in Key Stages 1 and 2
• supports early scientific understanding in EYFS through the United Curriculum, focusing on exploration, observation and discussion of the world
• develops scientific vocabulary so pupils can clearly communicate their ideas and findings
• encourages pupils to understand the relevance of science in everyday life and future careers
