Physical Education

At Moresby Primary School, we believe that Physical Education should help every child develop the skills, confidence and enjoyment needed to lead an active and healthy life. We want children to experience success in physical activity, discover activities they enjoy and develop the knowledge and habits that will support lifelong wellbeing.

Our PE curriculum provides a broad range of experiences across games, gymnastics and dance, with opportunities for children to develop their physical skills progressively from Early Years to Year 6. We use PE Hub to support our games curriculum, Val Sabin for dance and Key Steps Gymnastics to provide a structured progression in gymnastics.  We attend our local pool for swimming lessons across the junior year groups annually, usually in the spring term.

Children develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing and coordination before applying these skills in increasingly complex activities and games. They learn to understand tactics and rules, work effectively with others and develop the resilience to practise, improve and respond positively when things do not go according to plan.

We place particular value on participation, teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship. Children learn to celebrate success, show respect for others and demonstrate determination when faced with challenge. We provide opportunities for children to compete both within school and against other schools, while ensuring that competitive sport remains inclusive and enjoyable.

Our PE provision extends beyond curriculum lessons through a range of extra-curricular clubs and sporting opportunities, including dance, gymnastics, infants' football, girls' football and junior football. We regularly take part in local inter-school events, including football competitions and a swimming gala, giving children the opportunity to represent their school, compete with others and develop confidence in unfamiliar settings.

We also celebrate children's achievements and performances with our wider school community. Throughout the year, we hold dance and gymnastics evenings for parents, as well as an end-of-year show featuring both dance and gymnastics performances. These events provide children with valuable opportunities to perform, develop confidence and share their skills with an audience.

Ultimately, we want every child to leave Moresby Primary School feeling confident, capable and positive about being active, with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to continue participating in physical activity throughout their lives.
